The story begins by displaying college students wake up in the morning of St. Valentine’s Day and dressing up by themselves. Among all these students some of them are reciting poetry and some of them are murmuring the lines of a love song while combing their hair. All these students are from Appleyard College. The story took place in 1900 in the town of Woodend, Victoria, Australia. The film opens up with a goodbye and end it with a goodbye because separation is a very important elements in the story which leads to the mystery of life.
After the breakfast the principal send all the students with a governess, caretaker and a driver to a Picnic except Sara. The moment they step in the “Hanging Rock” they were warned through nature such as first notify was when they arrived one of the student open the gate and that time flock of blackbirds fly away. These blackbirds foreshadow the disappearance of school girls and a governess who were never to be seen again. While everybody is taking rest four of the students ask permission from the governess if they could look around the place by themselves. Among four of them Miranda, who lead others the way, to exhibit the rocks. It seems like Miranda and other girls are in search of finding themselves as if they were searching the reasons of their existence and that’s why it lead them to a conclusion that the rock was only waiting for them. When Miranda waved one of their classmates that signifies she might not come back. Miranda portrayed as a bird in the nest and she is waiting to escape and get lost in the nature. The nest was the school. The building of the school has an appearance of a jail because it was placed in an isolated area far from the city. It was also the place to keep away all these students protected from the dangerous world. The schools system was very restricted with rules and disciples, which is preparing all these students for their coming future. Besides Miranda, two person caught my attention one was the principal Mrs. Appleyard and Sara. It seems like they are having cold war between themselves.Mrs. Appleyard’s mission was to create future generation of women with principles and values but Sara was only student who break those routines of Mis. Appleyard. The significance difference and similarities between Sara and Miranda is both of them were trying to escape this suffocated school but only Miranda was able to free herself by surrendering towards the nature but on the other side of the table Sara in the pain of losing her love she die in a greenhouse. Sara’s memoization of the poems takes me back to my childhood. I was also like Sara hated to memorize the poems but now it makes more sense why parents and teachers force children to emphasise on a single poetry because sometimes poetry can express the image in your mind perfectly.
There were many strange incident in the story which does not make any sense to me such as when the girls were following the path of the rocks it seems like they were completely absorbed by the shaking sound mentally and physically. The boys who saw them that day were Michael and Albert; girls pass them but still they didn’t stop the girls from going into the internal deepness of the rock. That made Albert feel guilty and he became obsessed to find Miranda and others with the help of his friend but he found one girl among the missing persons. During his search he felt haunted, panicked and he was freezed by the sound of the rock which was similar to the missing girls’ situation. When the governess heard the screaming of the girls she ran towards the rock but she wasn’t wearing a skirt. The most strangest thing was, the girls took off their shoes and socks and they were walking barefoots. Another scariest part was the eye of the rock. It’s seems like the eyes were looking down at the entrance as if it was guarding and preventing whoever tries to go up inside the rock. Then about the shape of cutting the cake in a vertical way reflect the love between Sara and Miranda. It also portrayed the broken heart of Sara because of the picnic Miranda never returned to Sara. The images of swan symbolize Miranda because she was as beautiful as a swan and that cause Albert attention towards her.
Among all the mysteries and the strangeness I liked the background music of the flute. Besides the music there were many magnificent scenery that really moved me, such as after the meal everybody lay down on the ground to take rest that’s the time where student wear white dresses so with the girls wearing white dresses, the sound of the flute, the nature filled with greens, and the dazzling sun all of these were engaged so perfectly with each other which display an amazing scenery and it became difficult to express the beauty of the scene through words. The movements in the movie are very slow because it signifies the ladylike theme of the story that’s why every motion of the movie was graceful . It is a nice film and it also signifies childhood is a journey of an unknown mysteries world where everything looks beautiful that’s why the whole story was very youthful, naive, fresh just like the girls who were trying to find the themselves in the rock. I am still curious about the mystery behind this ‘Hanging Rock” because this two girls and the governess is still missing!
