Winter has officially arrived, but to warm up your fall season, consider watching Lidia Poet. It’s truly inspiring. The movie portrays the tumultuous journey she undertakes in Italy to fulfill her dream of becoming a female lawyer.
Lidia Poet was a renowned figure in the 1800s, especially in the courtroom. She was the only woman who could piece together complex cases during that era. Despite attending law school alongside men, her professors felt threatened by her exceptional intellect. At that time, it was challenging for women to receive an education and pursue a career, with only those from prestigious families having access. Even when women did gain educational opportunities, many were discouraged from using that education to achieve independence and earn their own income. Those who dared to do so often faced social isolation. Lidia's story is ultimately one of heroism; despite lacking support from her esteemed lawyer father, she remained determined to follow in her brother's footsteps and become a lawyer.
Season 1 display her conflict with her father, who later passes away. Her brothers encourage her sister-in-law to let Lidia stay with them, as her assistance could help her brother handle cases more efficiently. Thanks to Lidia, her brother received numerous prestigious cases, and she became a positive influence on her niece. Her presence was like a lucky charm, leading her sister-in-law to allow her to stay long-term. However, the bar community resented her brilliance, leading to the suspension of her license by the board of trustees.
Season 2 focuses on Lidia’s perseverance despite her suspended license. She continues to work alongside her brother, helping him solve high-profile cases. Ultimately, she risks everything to tackle a challenging political case, which allows her to redeem her license and practice law as a female lawyer. I highly recommend watching it; it beautifully illustrates the struggles a woman must face to achieve her dreams.
